Colony of Heaven Conversations: Politics

On Wednesday evening, September 25, at 7:00pm, Covenant will host our next Colony of Heaven Conversations in the Sanctuary.

We design these conversations as opportunities for the Covenant family to wrestle a bit more deeply with Christianity-and-culture issues than we can Sunday mornings.

At this conversation we'll take a next step in learning how to listen well across lines of difference.

As we look outside of the church, with the election just a few months away, tension across our nation is high, the ability to listen well continues to deteriorate, and most people are finding it difficult to have a peaceable conversation about politics.

As God leads us down the path of living a life of love, we are learning a different way to relate: with grace, honor, kindness, patience, and genuine love.

When we gather September 25, we'll have a few brief reminders of how to listen well. Then we'll pair with other sisters and brothers in our church family and have the chance for one person to listen well, practice curiosity and ask good questions, while the other person shares their thoughts about three questions:

1) What are your greatest concerns as you think about the United States right now? What feels most at stake for you?

2) Jonathan Haidt has identified six different values that come into play for each of us when we think about our nation and the goal of government. They are: loyalty/unity, freedom from oppression, authority/order, care for the needy, sanctity/purity, and fairness for all. Which are the values you value most as you consider who should be leading our country and how they should lead?

3) As you consider the upcoming presidential election, what factors are influencing how you are thinking about voting?

As a way to prepare for the conversations, we encourage you to reread these messages given by David, which relate to how to think and talk about our political views as followers of Jesus. You may also listen to them on our podcast feed. We will rerelease them as bonus episodes on Fridays in September.

The goal of the evening is for us to practice gracious and humble listening with each other, not persuade one another of our views. I hope you'll take a risk and join us.

Sunday evening, November 3, at 6:30pm, we invite the congregation to meet for forty-five minutes or so to pray for God to be glorified and for God's holy and loving purposes to be fulfilled in the election, using the World Vision prayer guide.

Sharing the adventure together,
