Suggestions for Studying the Bible

Familiarity with the Bible is important. Consider reading a Psalm and a chapter from the New Testament every day. When you’ve read through the whole New Testament once, consider adding a chapter from the Old Testament to your daily readings.

Become a student of the Word. On the most basic level, every passage of Scripture tells us something about God, or about ourselves, or about the relationship God desires to have with us. Which of those things is this portion of Scripture talking about? What does it say? Write down your insights and pray about them. You might also write down your questions and use a Bible dictionary to find some answers.

To go a bit deeper, you might use the inductive study method which has three simple steps: observation (what does it say?), interpretation (what did it mean to its first readers?), and application (what does it say to us today?). Remember, the goal is integration, not just information.

Scripture memory enriches your growth and makes God’s Word more personal. As God speaks to you in His Word, write down key verses and commit them to memory.
